While I hold a Ph.D. from Harvard, it is not in the visual arts. As a result, I would probably be characterized by most as a self-taught artist-- although I feel that gives me far too much credit. Over the last 30+ years I have learned from dozens-- even hundreds-- of other artists through classes, books, seminars, videos, and private conversations.
I work primarily in oil pastel and soft pastel (see the Commissions page for more info), but believe in using most any means to accomplish my vision for a particular painting. As a result, the majority of my artwork is not created in a single medium and may also include any or all of the following: oil paint, ink, colored pencil, graphite, watercolor, and/or acrylic paint.
The one limit I do impose upon myself is the strict use of the highest quality archival materials so that what I do produce will last you many generations.
Animal welfare is the social issue that speaks most strongly to me. I am the past president and adoption coordinator of Arizona Greyhound Rescue and have had the wonderful opportunity to place hundreds of dogs into permanent loving homes. I am also the host of the DVD, The Adopters' Guide to Life with Greyhounds, and the producer of the video, Healing the Grief of Pet Loss. (Upon your request, the latter DVD will be included with any commission of a pet memorial portrait.) I am currently owned by 4 rescue dogs, 3 rescue cats, and 4 rescue parrots. Other than finding a home for an abandoned animal, nothing is more gratifying to me that producing a portrait in honor of a beloved pet-- whether living or awaiting you at the Rainbow Bridge.
For every pet portrait commissioned, we donate 10% of the net price to an animal welfare 501(c)(3) non-profit (and we welcome your suggestion for specific agencies should you have one in mind). As always, please do not hesitate to email with any questions you might have for us!
