Commissions: Specializing in Pet Portraits

For every pet portrait commissioned, we donate 10% of the net price to an animal welfare 501(c)(3) non-profit (and we welcome your suggestion for specific agencies should you have one in mind).

Pet Portrait commissions are our specialty and will work with you every step of the way-- particularly in choosing the source photo or photos. (You can send us either a digital photo online or a printed photo through the mail.) We can usually combine aspects of different photos and also simplify or replace distracting or undesirable backgrounds. Remember, however, the clearer the photo the more detail we will be able to see and put in your final painting.

Overall, our style is considered realist but not photo- or hyper-realist. In other words, the artwork remains obviously a painting with paint-strokes and impasto visible rather than being an exact copy of a photograph. Each painting does vary however, with some leaning toward the looser and others to the more detailed. We'll discuss with you which style you prefer. Finally, we will also ask you to share a little bit about your pet's personality, likes and dislikes to give us a better feel for who we are painting.

The majority of our commissioned pet portraits are painted primarily in oil pastel but may also include any of the following media as well: oil paint, graphite, colored oil or wax pencil, ink, watercolor, soft pastel, and/or acrylic paint.

Oil Pastel was developed in France under the guidance of Pablo Picasso in his search for a medium as spontaneous as soft pastels but as robust as oil paint. It is for those same reasons that I find it so appealing. In appearance, an oil pastel painting resembles a traditional oil or acrylic far more than it does a soft pastel. Your artwork will come to you in a (removable) acid-free matte on archival artist's paper sealed with a clear vinyl fixative spray. It may be framed either without glass, like an oil painting, or behind glass, like a pastel, as you desire.

Pricing Table is for a single pet with a simple background. For each additional pet in the same painting please add 25%. For detailed backgrounds please add 15%. Again, we can easily simplify backgrounds if the one in your source photo is more complex than you wish. (This price list does not include shipping-- which generally runs from $5.00 to $15.00 within the United States depending on the size of the artwork.)

We accept all major credit cards, Paypal, checks, and money orders.

What if you don't like the final artwork? Then you don't have to buy! It's as simple as that. (However, we are confident this will not be the case!) We do not require a deposit. Once the final painting is complete, we will email you a proof for your approval before requesting payment and shipping you your artwork.

We accept charge cards, Paypal, money orders, and checks. International commissions welcome.

Our Fundamental Policy is Your 100% Satisfaction!

How long will this take? If you need your painting very quickly for a special gift please let us know and we will make every attempt to meet your needs. Generally, however, a painting requires 4-6 weeks for completion. The exact timing depends on its size and complexity as well as the number of other commissions, which varies by season and is busiest before the winter holidays. Email us for an up-to-date estimate.
